Balochistan launches maternal, newborn health initiative with China’s support

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has launched a comprehensive initiative to improve maternal and newborn healthcare services across seven districts with support from the Government of China, officials said on Wednesday.

The project, described as a major intervention in the province’s health sector, aims to upgrade around 100 medical centres to improve access to quality healthcare for mothers and infants, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

According to officials, the initiative is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in regions where maternal and child health indicators have remained below national averages for years.

Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, in a statement, expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its support, saying the collaboration reflects strong bilateral ties and places maternal and child health among the province’s top priorities.

Health department officials said the programme focuses not only on infrastructure upgrades but also on improving service delivery standards to ensure timely and effective medical care for expectant mothers and newborns.

They added that the initiative is expected to contribute to reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in Balochistan, which remain a longstanding public health challenge.
