ISLAMABAD: The Power Division has formally approached the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) seeking abolition of application fees and removal of licensing requirements for solar consumers with systems of up to 25 kilowatts.
The move, initiated on the direction of Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, is aimed at facilitating residential solar adoption and reducing regulatory hurdles for small-scale users.
Officials said that under the 2015 distributed generation regulations, solar systems of up to 25kW were exempt from licensing requirements and application fees, with approvals processed directly by distribution companies.
However, under the recently introduced Prosumer Regulations, approval powers have been centralised with Nepra and application fees have been extended to smaller consumers as well.
The Power Division has cautioned that the current framework may slow down the growth of renewable energy in the country, urging a return to the earlier, more consumer-friendly system to encourage wider adoption of solar energy.
