In a region where traditional gender roles heavily influence one’s path in life, Malaika Zahid is shattering stereotypes and inspiring a new generation of female boxersWith her remarkable journey, she’s proving that with determination and hard work, women can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.
“I never thought I’d be able to pursue my passion for boxing, especially in a society where girls are expected to prioritize domestic duties,” Malaika says. “But the unwavering support of my father and my own determination to persevere have made all the difference.”
Malaika’s father, Zahid Qayoum, shares his perspective on his daughter’s journey: “As a father, it’s been incredible to see Malaika grow and thrive in a sport she loves. I’ve always believed in her potential and supported her every step of the way. It’s not always easy, but witnessing her happiness and success makes it all worthwhile”
Her passion for the sport only intensified with time, but she faced stiff opposition from her community. “People would say, ‘Boxing is a man’s sport, what is a girl doing in the ring?'” Malaika recalls. “But I didn’t let their words discourage me.”
As Malaika entered her teenage years, she faced a new challenge: finding a safe and welcoming space to train. Most boxing clubs in Balochistan were male-dominated, and Malaika felt hesitant to join them. “I was scared to train with boys, as I didn’t know how they would react to a girl in the ring,” she says.
Despite this setback, Malaika persevered. She convinced her father, Zahid Khan, to help her set up a makeshift gym at home, where she could train in private. “I didn’t want my daughter to give up on her dreams,” Zahid Khan says. “So, I did everything I could to support her.”
Through sheer grit and determination, Malaika overcame every obstacle.
Malaika’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. She has been rewarded by numerous departments for her outstanding contributions to sports, including:
- The Pakistan Sports Board’s “Best Female Boxer” award
- The Balochistan Government’s “Pride of Balochistan” award
- The Pakistan Army’s “Courage and Determination” award
- The National Commission on the Status of Women’s “Role Model” award and so on.
Malaika’s story began in Balochistan, where she defied convention by taking up boxing at just 7 years old. Despite facing numerous challenges, including lack of access to female-only clubs and training facilities, she persevered and excelled. Today, she’s an official player for a renowned boxing club, with a trophy cabinet full of gold medals.
“The journey has been tough, but it’s taught me so much about resilience and determination,” Malaika reflects. “I’ve learned to embrace my uniqueness and use it to my advantage in the ring.”
Her Father Zahid Qayoum adds, “As a father, it’s heartening to see Malaika break down barriers and challenge societal norms. I’m proud to have played a role in her journey and will continue to support her every step of the way.”
Malaika’s impact goes far beyond her own achievements. She’s sparking a boxing revolution in Balochistan, empowering women and girls to take up the sport and challenge societal norms. Her DIY training club, set up with her father’s support, has become a beacon of hope for aspiring female boxers.
“I want to create a safe space for girls to pursue their passion for boxing, without fear of judgment or discrimination,” Malaika says. “I believe that sports have the power to transform lives and communities, and I’m committed to making that a reality.”
As Malaika’s fame grows, so does her impact. She’s becoming a role model for young girls across Pakistan, showing them that they too can break free from traditional expectations and pursue their dreams. Her success is challenging stereotypes and paving the way for greater gender equality in sports.
However, Malaika’s story also highlights the need for greater support and recognition for female athletes in Pakistan. Lack of access to resources, training facilities, and sponsorship opportunities continues to hinder the growth of women’s sports. By sharing Malaika’s journey, we hope to inspire change and create opportunities for women in sports, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society.
Let’s join hands to empower women and girls through sports, and create a brighter future for generations to come. Malaika Zahid’s boxing revolution is just the beginning – together, we have the power to drive meaningful change.
