A Step Toward Dignified Travel in Balochistan

The addition of 21 modern buses to Balochistan’s Green Bus Project is a commendable stride toward transforming public transportation in the province. With 17 buses allocated for Quetta and 4 for Turbat, including 5 “Pink Buses” reserved for women during designated hours, the initiative signals a commitment to inclusive, safe, and dignified travel. This move, driven by Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti’s vision, is more than a logistical upgrade—it’s a promise to enhance the quality of life for Balochistan’s residents.

The expansion of the Green Bus fleet, set to boost daily passenger capacity from 8-9 thousand to an impressive 40-50 thousand, addresses a long-standing need for reliable public transport in a region where commuting challenges are all too common. The inclusion of women-only buses is particularly noteworthy, offering a safe and respectful space for female commuters in a society where such considerations are vital for empowerment and mobility. Moreover, the creation of new employment opportunities through this project underscores its broader socio-economic benefits.

However, this promising step must be matched with sustained commitment. The government must ensure these buses are maintained to high standards, operate on schedule, and remain accessible to all, including marginalized communities. Transparency in fare structures and route planning will be critical to maximizing public trust and usage. Additionally, the success of the Pink Buses hinges on effective enforcement of their women-only designation and public awareness to ensure their purpose is respected.

This initiative sets a hopeful precedent, but it is only the beginning. We urge the Balochistan government to build on this momentum, expanding the fleet further, integrating eco-friendly technologies, and addressing rural connectivity to ensure no one is left behind. The people of Balochistan deserve a transport system that is modern, equitable, and reliable. Let these 21 buses be the first mile in a long journey toward that goal.
