Quetta, : Midwives are playing a crucial role in saving the lives of mothers and newborns and remain the backbone of safe childbirth services, said Secretary Health Balochistan Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Panizai on Wednesday.
He was speaking at a ceremony organised by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) programme in connection with the International Day of the Midwife.
Mr Panizai said the purpose of observing the day was to recognise and acknowledge the dedication, hard work and professional services of midwives across the province.
Speaking on the occasion, DG Health Dr Amin Mandokhail, Provincial Head MNCH Dr Gul Sabeen Ghorezai, Provincial Head FPAP Saadia Atta, Director Nursing Kulsoom Iqbal, Dr Ahmed Wali, Dr Noor Hassan, Dr Zafar Khosti and Dr Zahid Kakar said that behind every safe delivery was the tireless effort and professional expertise of skilled midwives, particularly in remote areas where their services remained indispensable.
The speakers reaffirmed the government’s commitment to further strengthen maternal and child healthcare by improving professional training, capacity building and provision of modern medical facilities to midwives.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, candles were lit by midwives along with Secretary Health Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Panizai and Provincial Head MNCH Dr Gul Sabeen Ghorezai, while shields were distributed among participants by the Secretary Health.
