PKMAP pays tribute to May 12 victims, demands justice

QUETTA: Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party on Monday paid tribute to the victims of the May 12, 2007 Karachi violence on the 19th anniversary of the incident and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.

In a statement issued from the party’s central secretariat, the party said it remembered all known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the supremacy of the Constitution, parliamentary sovereignty, democracy and equality among nations in a “true federation”.

The statement said the party, under the leadership of Mahmood Khan Achakzai, continued its struggle for the protection of the Constitution and democratic rights.

Referring to the May 12 violence in Karachi during the arrival of the then deposed chief justice, the party alleged that more than 50 political workers belonging to different parties were killed and injured in attacks carried out by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. It said PKMAP worker Mehtab Khan Afridi was also among those killed.

The statement regretted that even after 19 years, the victims had not received justice and the perpetrators had not been punished.

The party also criticised the current political and economic situation in the country, alleging that the people were facing inflation, unemployment and lack of basic facilities, while border trade restrictions had badly affected thousands of families dependent on cross-border business.

It demanded that the accused involved in the May 12 tragedy be brought to justice, calling it the government’s responsibility.
