QUETTA: A modern IT and E-Commerce Center has been established in Kharan under the Balochistan Socio Economic Development Initiative (BSDI) in collaboration with the Kharan Rifles, aiming to provide local youth with digital skills and expand access to online employment opportunities.

Named “Digital Oasis Kharan,” the center has been developed by converting an underutilized section of the Local Public School Kharan into a dedicated technology and training facility. The initiative is intended to help improve digital literacy and promote freelancing and e-commerce among young people in the district.

The center is equipped with an IT laboratory featuring 50 high-performance computer systems, 75-inch interactive digital displays, an integrated sound system, and high-speed internet connectivity. The facility also includes a physical library, a digital library, a faculty office, a conference hall, and a dedicated freelancers’ hub designed to encourage collaboration and support online work.

To ensure uninterrupted operations, the facility is powered by a 20-kilowatt solar energy system with generator backup.

Training activities have commenced through a specialized Learning Management System (LMS), enabling structured course delivery and assignment management. Four qualified IT instructors have been appointed to conduct training for the inaugural batch of students.

According to project officials, 35 students have enrolled in the first cohort, including 14 female and 21 male trainees. They said interest in the program continues to grow, with additional admission requests being received from across the district.

The initiative is part of a broader provincial plan to expand digital education and e-commerce training across Balochistan. Under the roadmap, e-commerce laboratories are planned for all 150 male and female colleges in the province by December 2026.

Officials said the initiative aims to enhance digital skills and create online income opportunities for an estimated 15,000 students graduating annually from colleges across Balochistan. They added that work on the project is progressing steadily, with 40 college-based laboratories already completed or in the final stages of commissioning.
