Islamabad :The Senate has approved all 22 clauses of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, with the voting process for the overall approval currently underway.
During a session chaired by Yousaf Raza Gillani, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the amendment and requested it be considered on the supplementary agenda.
The Minister noted that a committee was formed to discuss the amendment, which included all parliamentary parties, and consultations were held with the opposition.
Subsequently, parliamentary leaders from various parties expressed their views in the Senate. The motion for voting on the constitutional amendments was passed by a majority.
Chairman Gillani addressed the opposition, highlighting their limited presence in the chamber. To ensure a proper count, the doors of the Senate were closed.
The process for clause-by-clause approval was completed, requiring a two-thirds majority for each clause under the constitution. The first clause was approved, with 65 members voting in favor of the second clause, increasing the government’s count from 58 to 65.
The votes in favor of the constitutional amendments included 58 from the government, 2 from BNP Mengal, and 5 from JUI. Senators Qasim Ranjha and Naseema Ehsan voted in favor of the amendment.
During the approval process, members of PTI, Sunni Ittehad Council, and MQM left the chamber.
The Senate has successfully completed the step-by-step approval of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, with the government needing 64 votes for the amendment to pass.
