Islamabad: The Centre for Aerospace & Security Studies (CASS), Islamabad, held a webinar featuring author Carlos Yebra Lopez on his book “Methodologies in Critical Terrorism Studies: Gaps and Interdisciplinary Perspectives.”
As part of its Author’s Talk Series, the session explored the evolution of Critical Terrorism Studies (CTS), its divergence from traditional approaches, and the need for more inclusive and reflective methodologies.
Dr. Usman Chohan, Advisor to President CASS, opened the session and highlighted Pakistan’s long-standing struggle with terrorism, stressing the importance of studying CTS in today’s security environment.
Carlos Lopez traced modern terrorism’s roots to global media exposure and discussed the limitations of conventional Terrorism Studies, especially its lack of input from the Global South. He emphasized gaps in empirical research, overreliance on discourse analysis, and minimal post-colonial perspectives.
Air Marshal Zahid Mehmood (Retd), Senior Director CASS, closed the session by urging researchers to produce balanced, reflective studies and bridge the knowledge gap with contributions from non-Western contexts.
The webinar concluded with a Q&A session, where participants engaged in a lively discussion on the book’s core themes.
